Home Away From Home or Running Away From Home
Last summer several two couples I know came to one of the local RV spots with golf on their minds. I dropped over one afternoon – well actually it was closer to evening – as the men were sitting outside having a cool drink while their wives cooked dinner. I stuck my head inside to say hello and there they were peeling potatoes while the steaks were marinating in preparation for the grill. For a split second I forgot I was in the middle of a row of Fifth Wheels. I could have been in their house back on the outskirts of the big city. I stayed and had a beer with them.
On my way home, I wondered about the concept of driving a thousand miles to do the very same thing they could have done at home. When I RV, I tend to eat simpler meals than I do at home. There are very few mashed potatoes prepared in my RV. Since they were echoing their way of life back home I wondered why they traveled. The golfing is great around here and while that might be enough of a reason for the long trip, the fact is that golfing was just as good back near their own home. It was almost a week later when I visited again, this time with an invitation to a great lasagna dinner, complete with garlic bread. As we sat around the table that had been set up outside the ambiance, the conversation, even the dishes, were the same as I had enjoyed back in their house and then I realized that for these friends of mine, their reason for RVing was different than mine. I like to get away, to explore the possibilities and sometimes the “what-ifs” of life. For them, they liked their core of hominess and this is what they emulated when they traveled. Each year they had a route they took, staying two weeks here and three weeks there, having their favorite home cooked meals on their favorite daily dishes. The Fifth Wheel was their perfect choice as it provided living conditions that were no less than luxurious with a satellite dish mounted to the side. For me, a less palatial RV suited the purpose – its duty was to carry me off on adventures, take me away. Explore your own reasons for RVing. If you are one of those people who started off RVing and then began to lose interest andnow have an RV sitting idle in the yard, consider why you have it? Why did you buy it in the first place? Is it not meeting your needs? Rather than leave it sitting forlornly waiting to transport you, spend some time with it. Even if you do nothing more than sit in it in the yard for an hour or two while you read your newspaper and have a cup of coffee, you will get a feel for how you and that particular RV work together. It may be too big for you, too small for you, or maybe, like Goldilocks and Baby Bear’s bed, it might be just right for you after all and you don’t have the time for RVing. If this is the case, you likely already know it – when you contemplated the idea of taking two hours to read a newspaper and drink coffee if you thought, well, I certainly don’t have time to waste doing silly things like that, you are likely suffering from lack of time. If this is the case, go back to the question of why did you buy the RV in the first place and try to recapture that glorious feeling. For after all, RVing is a marvellous way of life – whether you are trying to take your cozy homestyle of life on the road or whether you are exploring other lifestyles.....
